1) QUICK SUMMARY

– We collect basic website usage data (like IP address and device/browser info) to operate and secure the Service.

– If you create an account, submit a pin/sighting, upload photos, or contact us, we collect the information you provide.

– Wildlife location data you submit may be public depending on your settings. Please avoid posting precise locations that could harm wildlife or violate laws.

– We do not sell your personal information. [IF YOU USE AD TECH / TARGETED ADS: We may “share” certain information for cross-context behavioral advertising; see Section 7.]

– You can request access, deletion, or correction of your information (see Section 10).

2) INFORMATION WE COLLECT

  1. Information you provide

Depending on how you use the Service, you may provide:

– Contact details: name, email address, and any information you include in messages

– Account details: username, password (stored hashed), profile details

– Submissions / User Content: wildlife sightings, pins, notes, photos, videos, comments, timestamps, and location you choose to share

– Preferences: notification settings, content visibility choices

  1. Information collected automatically

When you use the Service, we may automatically collect:

– Identifiers & device data: IP address, device type, operating system, browser, language, approximate location (derived from IP)

– Usage data: pages viewed, clicks, referring/exit pages, time spent, log files, error reports

– Cookie/SDK data: identifiers used for analytics, security, and preferences (see Section 9)

  1. Precise geolocation (only if enabled by you)

If you allow location permissions in your browser/device, we may collect precise geolocation to help you add a pin or improve map features. You can disable location sharing in your device/browser settings.

3) HOW WE USE INFORMATION

We use information to:

– Provide and operate the Service (maps, pins, features you request)

– Create and manage accounts and authenticate users

– Display user-submitted content based on your visibility settings

– Moderate content and enforce our Terms

– Communicate with you (support, updates, security alerts)

– Improve and analyze performance and user experience

– Legal obligation: compliance with law

5)

HOW USER CONTENT & WILDLIFE LOCATIONS WORK

A. Public vs private content
Some submissions may be eligible to appear publicly (depending on your settings and the type of submission). If your submission is approved, it may be visible to other visitors.

B. Delayed posting & admin review
To help protect wildlife and reduce risk of disturbance, we do not publish wildlife location submissions in real time. Public sightings/locations are subject to:

– a minimum 24-hour delay before publication, and
– administrator review/approval.

We may apply longer delays and/or decline publication.

C. Location obfuscation (generalization) to protect wildlife

D. What we may retain internally
For operations, safety, moderation, or recordkeeping, we may retain the original submission data you provide (which may include more precise location/time than what is displayed publicly). Access is limited to personnel and service providers who need it to operate and protect the Service and wildlife.

E. Sharing for safety or legal reasons
We may share information (including submission details) if we believe it is reasonably necessary to comply with law, respond to lawful requests, address safety concerns, or assist land managers or wildlife authorities in preventing harm or illegal activity.

If content is approved for publication, we may obscure or generalize the location and/or timestamp shown publicly (for example, showing a broader area rather than precise coordinates), especially for sensitive wildlife or habitats.

6) HOW WE SHARE INFORMATION

We may share information:

– With service providers (hosting, analytics, security, email delivery) who process data on our behalf

– With map and content delivery providers needed to render the Service

– For legal reasons (to comply with law, enforce Terms, protect rights/safety)

– In business transfers (merger, acquisition, financing, sale of assets)

We do not share User Content marked private except to provide the Service, enforce policies, or comply with law.

7) “SALE” / “SHARING” OF PERSONAL INFORMATION (CALIFORNIA)

We do not sell your personal information for money.

[IF YOU DO NOT RUN TARGETED ADS]

We also do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

[IF YOU RUN TARGETED ADS / RETARGETING]

We may share certain identifiers and usage data with advertising partners for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents can opt out by using our “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link in the footer or by sending the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, where applicable.

8) DATA RETENTION

We retain information only as long as necessary for:

– Providing the Service

– Legitimate business needs (security, dispute prevention)

– Legal compliance

You may request deletion (see Section 10). Some information may be retained as required by law or for legitimate security purposes.

9) COOKIES & TRACKING

We use cookies and similar technologies for:

– Strictly necessary functions (security, session management)

– Preferences (e.g., remembering settings)

– Analytics (understanding traffic and performance)

– [OPTIONAL] Advertising (if enabled)

You can manage cookies in your browser settings. Where required, we provide cookie consent controls.

DO NOT TRACK

Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal. Because there is no consistent industry standard, we currently [do / do not] respond to DNT signals.

If we recognize Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals for opt-out requests, we will process them where applicable.
